Permit to work - asbestos

Permit to work - asbestos

If asbestos is affected by building or maintenance work, you must ensure that strict precautions are followed. Use our permit to work to keep on the right side of the law.

Complying with your duties

Clients have significant responsibilities under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 for work which may disturb asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). But very few building managers have experience of work with ACMs. For the majority of the time their top priority is to make sure that the material is left untouched.

To help with these duties we’ve produced a Permit to Work - Asbestos. Use this to check your specialist contractors plans, e.g. for removal or for building work affecting asbestos. You can also use it to oversee the work of in-house maintenance teams if your staff are capable of smaller scale jobs involving ACMs.

Format

There are six parts:

Part 1 - Job details

Part 2 - Precautions

Part 3 - Authorisation

Part 4 - Receipt

Part 5 - Handback

Part 6 - Cancellation

Parts four and five are signed off by the supervisor in charge of the work, whilst all the other sections are completed by the authorised permit issuer.

Note. The manager issuing the permit does not need to be an expert, but they should have sufficient knowledge to be able to understand the questions on the form and the work to be carried out.
