Gas cylinder storage checklist

Gas cylinder storage checklist

Any gas cylinders on your site must be stored in a safe way.  Use our checklist to review your current arrangements and determine any improvements needed.

What’s the risk?

Gas cylinders are hazardous regardless of the contents because they are pressure vessels. In addition, there may be hazards associated with the gases themselves which could be flammable, toxic or oxidising. For example, gas may be freezing cold or cause asphyxiation when released in a small space. If there is a fault in the valve or the cylinder is not sealed, gases may leak out.

Therefore, it’s worth knowing and applying the guidelines for storage of compressed gases. In particular, the advice of the British Compressed Gases Association (BCGA) should be taken into account.

In our Gas Cylinder Storage Checklist we’ve referenced the BCGA’s Code of Practice 44 (CP44), which gives general guidance on the safe storage of gas cylinders. This means that by following our checklist you’ll have reviewed many of the important aspects of storage which the industry and HSE expect.
