Environmental fire prevention plan

Environmental fire prevention plan

The potential for fire to break out is not only a safety issue but also an environmental one. For that reason some higher risk businesses must have a fire prevention plan. Our template document can be used to create one.

Standards

A detailed fire prevention plan is required where there is an environmental permit for combustible waste storage. It’s also needed in some other circumstances specified by the Environment Agency (EA).

However, you might decide to develop such a plan as a matter of good practice, even where you have not been specifically required to do so.

In November 2016 the EA issued updated guidance for such businesses, entitled “Fire prevention plans: environmental permits”. You can download a free copy at http://tinyurl.com/ybbfs8k2.

Our Environmental Fire Prevention Plan template is designed to help you put together your plan. It sets out key headings and suggested content in tune with the EAs guidance.

The plan includes an assessment of fire hazards and sources of ignition, written management arrangements and a description of the measures taken and to be implemented to prevent fires from starting and spreading. The measures must include how fire will be detected, contained and put out, and how run-off water from firefighting will be contained.

It must consider all combustible materials including paper, cardboard, plastics, rubber, wood, textiles, scrap metals, waste electrical equipment, compost, etc.
